It may strike you as a bit strange that me, a marketer by trade, would place such an importance on sales. However, when you’re fresh in an industry and starting a new business, you must know how to convert sales faster than your competitors or risk burning your company out before it’s had a chance to shine.

It almost goes without saying that sales are key in starting up a business, however it amazes me how many new entrepreneurs focus exclusively on marketing their product without any focus on selling it.When you’re starting a business, you’re simply not going to get a lot of traffic to your website. It takes patience and targeting mechanisms to build a sizable audience, and you need to start generating money now.

So, the few people that you do have coming to your fledgling website need to be converted. Early in this process, the best thing you can do is talk to people directly to get the sale. Practice your sales skills by actually making sales calls. You don’t want to just opt-in every single hit on your website and blast their inboxes with long form copy. That doesn’t help your personal persuasion, and perhaps more importantly, it doesn’t help you collect data about your target audience.

By talking to people on the phone, you can ask them what they’re looking for out of your product or industry. You can adjust your message to their personal needs, therefore building trust in your brand and collecting data for your company’s future decisions. The more information you have on your niche, the better.

Get To Know Your Clients Better

This is partially due to the the fact that initially, you don’t even know what your client wants. You’re starting a new business in an industry you may or may not have a lot of first-hand experience in. Use your sales calls as an opportunity to gain that experience and gather data for long-term marketing strategy. Plainly put, you are much more like to convert sales faster than others if you have the best data collection skills in your niche.

This is how you develop your product, quickly build a solid foundation of business knowledge, and convert sales faster than the other companies around you. Down the road, there will be a time when you have so much traffic that you can’t handle all of your sales calls, BUT you are going to have a lot of data. You’ll know what people respond to on the phone, what their most urgent needs are, what works as a response, and so on. You’ll learn re-framing tactics in persuasion, so when someone says “I don’t have enough money”, you’ll have eight responses dialed up in your head from past data you’ve collected.You’ll know what solution works best.

And yet, the number one benefit of actually selling on the phone as opposed to a sales letter is the increased close rate. Now, of course I’ve done sales letters in the past, I’m not knocking them. Recently, I had a letter that produced a 4% conversation rate, which is pretty good from cold traffic. But, here’s the kicker. When I get someone on the phone for my business, my conversation number jump to an astounding 65% close rate.

I’m sure you can do the math on this one. If you have 5-10 people per day, and you close 65% of them on a reasonably priced consulting package, you’re not doing too bad. You’re definitely doing amazing compared to a 4% sales letter conversion. Furthermore, if you’re making a profit, or if you already have the capital, you can hire someone at, let’s say, $15 an hour to close the deal for you. After trying this out for a while, you can of course calculate if it’s still worth it spending those man hours converting the sale. Because, if it is, you should be collecting PHONE NUMBERS, not just emails. Forgetting to work the phones for sales is way too common among many young entrepreneurs. Now, many of the leads from my phone calls come from YouTube, and the client may already know a bit about my business. I highly encourage you to follow this process as well and implement a YouTube channel with an opt-in for phone numbers. That’s what I’m doing right now myself. You can go on my YouTube, my blog, or anywhere else associated with my company and find my phone number. If you call, I first check if I can be of service to you (naturally); I’m not a “hard closer” like the Wolf of Wall Street or something, but I do sell on the phone quite well because of my highly targeted audience and prior data collection.

So, let’s talk about how I actually get people on the phone. Now, mind you that this is some of my best knowledge right now, the stuff that really gets me closing things. But, as usual, I’m going to share it for free to build better value. You can implement this and let me know how it goes for your business.

YouTube Opt-Ins Build The Funnel

So, first you must implement an active and exciting YouTube channel. As I discuss in my video marketing tutorial, shoot your videos in exciting locations and draw your audience in with the story and development of your company. At this point, you go in to each of your videos and put up an “annotation” that leads your visitors to a landing page on your website. On this landing page, you should have an opt-in to get a free consulting session by phone. By then, you’ve got them.

Now, you can also use this tactic with articles on your website as well. Even this article alone has several links to other parts of my website and further information about my company and brand. You should follow these actions as well to help build your funnel and create a larger client base. And, of course, get them on phone or in person – direct contact is always the best way to close a sale.

So, convert sales faster by collecting data, getting them on the phone, and taking charge of your opt-in funnel. With that, you will see growth at a level you’ve never expected, and both your company and customers a great service.
